We were asked to design a new 23,000 sq ft Hollywood Bowl bowling alley and cinema complex at The Brewery Centre, Cheltenham, as part of a £30m regeneration.
In engineering terms, it was more complicated than you might imagine. Eight full-sized bowling lanes sit on sprung acoustic concrete slabs, together with heavy ‘pin spotter’ mechanics. Columns in the existing layout were removed: the roof load was redistributed using stiff transfer beams constructed in situ with minimal temporary works.
In a shopping centre, time is money. Our scheme kept the ground floor restaurant trading throughout.
